Bus and Train Services between Fuchu and Tokyo

1. Keio Line: A Private Railway Company
(Hachioji -- Fuchu -- Shinjuku)

i) Take a bus to Fuchu Station at the bus stop shown on the Map (pick up a boarding ticket (No.3) when you enter the bus, and deposit 170 yen when you get off), and get off at the terminal in front of Fuchu Station. (You can also walk to Fuchu Station from the Institute in about 15 minutes.)

ii) At Fuchu Station, take a train at Platform 3. Trains at Platform 3 are usually semi special express (Jyun-tokkyu) or special express (Tokkyu) trains. Take either of them. The special and the semi-express trains stop at Chofu, Meidaimae and Shinjuku, running from Fuchu to Shinjuku in about 23 minutes.
Express Trains stop at Higashi-Fuchu, Chofu, Tsutsujigaoka, Chitosekarasuyama, Sakurajosui, Meidaimae, Sasazuka (in the daytime) and then Shinjuku, and run from Fuchu to Shinjuku in about 30 minutes.
On either train, seats are not reserved, and no extra charge is required for the special express.
(At Fuchu Station, a local train may be waiting at Platform 4 before an express or a special express train comes into Platform 3, but do not take the train at Platform 4. It does not ordinarily go as far as Shinjuku, or, even if it does, it is very slow in getting to Shinjuku.)
The first special express train bound for Shinjuku leaves Fuchu at 8:48 a.m. from Monday through Friday, and at 8:14 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and other holidays.

iii) To return from Shinjuku to Fuchu, take a train at Platform 3. They are express or special express trains.
In this case, however, be careful not to take an express to Hashimoto; it does not go as far as Fuchu. So the best way is to ask, "Kono Densha-wa Fuchu-e Ikimasu-ka?" (Does this train go to Fuchu?).
The last special express train bound for Fuchu leaves Shinjuku at 10:40 p.m. on weekdays, and at 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and other holidays.

ii) At Nishi-Kokubunji Station, transfer to the Chuo Line and a rapid (Kaisoku) train at Platform 2 which goes as far as Tokyo Sta. via Shinjuku. Rapid services are available between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. It takes about 30 minutes to Shinjuku and about 45 minutes to Tokyo Sta.

iii) To return from Tokyo Sta. to Nishi-Kokubunji, take a rapid train at Platform 1 or 2.
iv) At Nishi-Kokubunji Station, transfer to the Musashino Line and take a train at Platform 3 which goes to Fuchu-Honmachi, Kita-Fuchu is next to Nishi Kokubunji.

Taxi

1. The English word "taxi" is used in Japan. A tip is not necessary.
2. You can come to the Institute from Fuchu Station by taxi for about 800 yen; from Kokubunji Station it costs about 1,000 yen.
3. If you want to take a taxi from the Institute, the officer at the front desk will call a taxi on request. In this case, however, the charge may be higher than when you pick up a taxi on the street, because they often charge for the distance from the taxi station to the Institute.
